What is treated wood? Treated lumber or board is wood that has been appropriately treated with preservative chemicals with the intent of prolonging its intended useful life cycle compared to untreated wood. There are different types of applications and preservatives used to protect wood fibers from: structural degradation, decay fungi, termites, marine organisms, and flames.
What are the Common Preservative Protection Use Categories? The American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) designates what preservative systems and retentions have been determined to be effective in protecting wood products under specified exposure conditions. These are: Fungal rot/decay and termite protection; Outdoor, exposed applications; Interior framing; Marine organisms; Dock/pier pilings; Fire Retardant Treated Wood (FRTW).
Pressure Treatments are classified into three types: Waterborne treated lumber is commonly utilized in residential, commercial, and industrial structures. Creosote-treated lumber is generally used to treat guardrail posts, railroad ties, and marine timbers. Utility poles and cross arms are treated with oil-borne treated lumber.
How long does Pressure-Treated wood last? Typically, it depends on the location or climate, the type of wood, its uses, and how well it is maintained. While pressure-treated timber can last up to 40 years without showing signs of rot or decay, decks and flooring applications may only last 10 years.
